Sienna Procida

Sienna Procida is a knitwear designer whose practice centres around material exploration and experimental construction. Her work investigates the interplay between texture, form and meaning, using knitwear not only as a form or dress, but also as an agent of social commentary and critical reflection.

Procida embraces experimentation, allowing material behaviour and qualities to lead the development of each piece. This emphasis on storytelling and sensory experience results in wearable narratives, that are both visually striking and thought provoking.

Through combining unconventional materials and processes, Procida challenges traditional bounds of knitwear, transforming it into a vehicle for story-telling, creating garments that exist between fashion and art.

Procida's “Sustainable White” project is about reclaiming one's bodily autonomy, and how memories can linger on skin. To explore this, Procida has used knit to portray torn garments. The final garment is proof of conscious making, developed using reclaimed yarns, cheesecloth and corn-starch as a natural stiffening agent, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness. Each element is constructed through an exploratory process, allowing the materials to inform the final silhouette.

Procida's Final Major Project, “Pesky People” pokes fun at a lack of introspection, treating common “annoying” animal behaviours as a parallel to human behaviour. The fully knit design experiments with different textures and patterns, whilst keeping hold of excess threads to reduce waste.
