Khalil Alam Bhuiya is a product designer, born and based in London. An innovative mind that excels at networking and multifaceted product design, his portfolio spans furniture, eyewear, small scale architecture, prop-building, packaging and jewellery. Blending culture and contemporary forms, his projects have a signature that is unique, utilising materials and mechanisms in unprecedented ways, with each idea pushing boundaries to explore something new.
From the streets of East London to rural Bangladesh, Bhuiya has a sweet juxtaposition between urban and agricultural environments, absorbing the influences around him and finding the balance in between. The ancient craftsmanship of Bengal, the heritage passed down to each generation, modern materials and manufacturing, and the process of British contemporary design all inform his work. Bhuiya willingly seeks out challenges, to make his own mark on the world and leave a legacy for those who come after him.
This ethos is best exemplified in his Final Major Project, Shompoti (Inheritance). A statement piece for the British-Bengali home and a homage to Bangladesh itself, Shompoti is a heterogeneous mix of inherited design languages. It fuses natural materials with contemporary aesthetics to create a creation that demands attention and invites dialogue.
Working as an independent freelancer, Bhuiya thrives as a transnational designer, undertaking projects across the globe, easily fitting into team structures and delivering work of high standard.
