Elizandra Da Silva Cunha is an architecture student. Their Final Major Project explored the context of Kentish Town and developed a contradictory 'greasy spoon' cafe with an urban running track.

Originally intended to support night workers, the café has been reimagined to operate throughout the day in order to accommodate a wider range of users. The proposal forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen community connections while remaining accessible to different groups within the neighbourhood. Observations from the site visit revealed a strong presence of young people during the late afternoon, particularly students from nearby schools and sixth forms. Many lacked safe and welcoming spaces to spend time, often resulting in noise, conflict, and tension within the surrounding residential environment.

Rather than viewing this issue as a problem, the project recognises it as an opportunity to design for coexistence and inclusivity. The building aims to provide a sense of safety and belonging for young people while also supporting other members of the community. At the centre of the proposal is the integration of green spaces that encourage relaxation, wellbeing, and social interaction. Landscaped seating areas, sheltered zones, and natural environments offer spaces to unwind, connect with others, and engage with nature. These spaces create a welcoming environment for young people, night workers, gym users, and runners alike. Ultimately, the project promotes a balanced, inclusive, and harmonious neighbourhood where people can gather, express themselves, and thrive together.
