Yen Nhi Phan

Yen Nhi Phan is a concept-driven fashion designer whose work explores culture, tradition, and personal identity through contemporary silhouette, textile development, and visual storytelling. Her practice begins with close observation of everyday details, transforming them into garments with structure, emotion, and a strong sense of craft.

Phan's graduate collection, Hanoian, reinterprets Hanoi’s street life through a contemporary lens while reflecting on the distinctive cultural identity of local communities shaped over generations. Inspired by street vendors, plastic stools, tangled wires, aged walls, and the rhythm of sidewalk life, the collection captures the city’s raw, poetic, and chaotic beauty. Through hand-crafted textiles, hand-painting, and tactile surface development, Phan creates sculptural garments that carry memory, movement, and the urban spirit of Vietnam.

Hanoian explores the visual rhythm of Hanoi’s everyday life, where quiet sidewalk moments exist alongside tangled wires, weathered walls, and constant urban movement. The collection translates these familiar street fragments into a contemporary fashion language.

The material direction draws from Hanoi’s aged surfaces and street palette: moss green, faded yellow, brick red, earthy brown, cable black, and off-white. Hand weaving, knitting, and fabric painting are used to reinterpret the textures of old walls, bamboo baskets, and tangled city lines.

The final line-up transforms Hanoi’s street culture into a contemporary collection with oversized outerwear, exaggerated trousers, protective layers, and hand-crafted surface details. The garments balance the calmness of “slow life” with the chaotic rhythm of the city.

This look is inspired by the familiar image of Hanoi’s street vendors carrying bamboo baskets balanced on both shoulders. The hand-painted details reinterpret these woven baskets, while the back of the garment draws from the way local workers often carry a conical hat behind them.
