Kiara Vasconez
The design proposal of Kiara Vasconez responds to the approach of the building, in particular the glazed windows around the majority of the building that immediately draw visitors in. On the ground floor the basketball court sits in the centre of the space acting as a hub for public engagement and interaction. This space is not only designed for sports but for connection to either play, watch or to experience the atmosphere.
Moving upstairs the building transitions into a quieter more focused space. The first floor is an educational facility designed for secondary students, offering a shared space for learning and social interaction. The circulation is simple it divides private and public space where users still move freely while also encouraging encounters with others, this acts as a way to create a community.
Natural light plays a key role throughout the design. Vasconez's intervention of an extension of glass around the building allows daylight to flood both floors. This proposal explores the relationship between movement and learning by combining a sports space and educational environment. This creates a balanced space that supports both physical activity to encourage health and well being and continuous learning while strengthening community engagement.
