Joel Corpuz

Joel Corpuz is a multidisciplinary visual communication designer whose work explores movement, embodied interaction, and non verbal communication. Currently studying Visual Communications at Ravensbourne University London, he investigates how physical dialogue, particularly within Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, can be translated into visual form. His practice focuses on the subtle exchanges of pressure, rhythm, trust, and mutual respect that shape the sport, treating these interactions as a silent language.

Corpuz works across analogue and digital processes, combining sequential photography, gestural mark making, and pressure mapping studies with software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Krita. This hybrid approach allows him to build expressive, modular visual systems that capture the nuances of bodily communication. Informed by motion studies and contemporary design methods, Corpuz aims to create outcomes that articulate experiences that are difficult to express verbally, transforming movement and interpersonal connection into compelling visual communication.

Final Major Project, Final Outcome Poster Sequence
Final Major Project, Final Outcome Poster SequenceThis Corpuz's final outcome consisting of four posters that all synthesise with one another, and expressing the techniques through pressure mapping to show where on the body where the most pressure is present. Corpuz's work explores the mutual respect within the partners, having trust in them and being put in vulnerable positions. Using pressure mapping, Corpuz's able to show these ideas as It presents how much pressure you place onto one another, as too much pressure could lead to injuries.
Final Major Project, Mock Poster Sequence
Final Major Project, Mock Poster SequenceThis is a sequence of posters that Corpuz made during the Final Major Project. This is a mock final outcome to see how Corpuz would like to lay them out. It depicts a move that’s seen in BJJ as well as Judo. Corpuz involved two key parts of the Brazilian and Japanese flags to show origins, and also used Japanese lettering to complete the flag. The background shows water droplets and rippling to represent how the technique would flow, making the movement fluid.

Unit 1, i-D MagazinesThese are covers that Corpuz created for i-D Magazine, based on the task of finding outfits that matched the two chosen words. Following a photoshoot, Corpuz edited the images in Adobe Photoshop to create the final magazine covers.
Unit 2, Alex Pereira Children's Story Mockups
Unit 2, Alex Pereira Children's Story MockupsThis is a children’s story created by Corpuz, based on the theme of choosing an unsung hero. Corpuz selected Alex Pereira, a UFC fighter who experienced a difficult upbringing but managed to turn his life around through training in kickboxing.
