Winston Katugaha

BHM Winston Katugaha is a photographer whose practice involves creating experimental work. This includes infrared photography, experimental analogue film processes and building custom rigging and cameras for his ideas. He has a background in engineering and robotics from Singapore which feeds into the inquisitive nature of his work and methodology often leading to projects with long preparation time.

He loves questioning the nature of things or concepts in his work such as what is the difference of quality of light when passing through church-stained glass compared to coloured gel filters, or 3D printing camera or camera parts to use with sheet film and hand painted emulsion. With this thinking in mind he has picked up a host of different skills such as glass cutting and crafting, wood working, 3d designing, metalworking, working with chemistry commercially available and made from home sourced ingredients, set design, software design, camera maintenance for various brands, digital and film, and various other skills that he is still developing and learning.

His work doesn’t only stem from the final outcome as the whole process of the creation is just as important to him. He hopes to continue learning new skills, questioning and creating more work as he furthers his career.

Memento Vivere (Remember To Live)
Memento Vivere (Remember To Live)Selected from a series that was submitted to the Sony Awards. Questioning if there was a way to merge the qualities of digital and analogue film while keeping their distinct qualities. Shot on Canon R5, 120 MM Black and White Kentmere Film Shot on Mamiya RB67.
Failure Of Ambition
Failure Of AmbitionSelected from a series that was an attempt at glass plate autochromes, hand coating emulsion and home development for FMP. The images peeled off the plates during the development, and ended up as a failed try, placed next to the flowers that was the still life subject of the peeled emulsion. Shot on Canon R5, 4X5 Hand Coated Fotospeed Liquid Emulsion Glass Plates Shot on Cambo SC.
Selected from a series that was for a magazine brief, shot following the vintage fashion and feel of the magazine, however a technical fault of the lens resulted in a double image. 120 MM Black and White Kentmere Film Shot on Mamiya RB67.
