Anand Macwan

What is interesting about Anand Macwan is his curiosity about digital systems. What does it mean for a non-Western individual to use technology built on datasets curated from Western culture? Inclusivity speaks volumes to Macwan. Having grown up in India, in stark contrast to Western culture, he works with an awareness of the weight of design, and believes it's a powerful platform for addressing social issues.

Macwan believes in intentional disruption, that evolution proves things can’t always stay the same, and that rules need to be broken. Every project aims to do something that hasn’t been done before. Every project of his, from Non-Consensual Intelligence, where he pushes TouchDesigner to its limits to make surveillance visible, to Based, where he questions the glorification of alcohol consumption and how we can use design to encourage mindful consumption, his work is backed by deep research, strong strategy and design innovation that challenges standards.

If asked what he most enjoys working with he would have a different answer every time, possibly motion design, branding, advertising, projection mapping, editorial, type design, even music production, but more often than not, he is found him working digitally, mostly with code. He loves creative coding. He thinks it's “contemporary and cool”.

Non-Consensual IntelligenceAn interactive TouchDesigner experience that makes surveillance visible. Centralised, opaque, controlled by a handful of companies. This project pulls it into view.
Based
BasedBased questions alcohol brands that glorify consumption. Shifting the narrative from that getting wasted every weekend is necessary to have fun, to encouraging mindful consumption, guided through design that puts transparency and clarity at the forefront.
Are we Evolving?A camera records its own projection, layering on itself like two mirrors. Time becomes visible. Change isn't abstract here. You watch it happen. You're part of it.
Thinking BlockA research-led short film demonstrating the incompatibility of AI with non-Western cultures. It explores how the lack of diverse training data shapes inclusivity in design.
Rave Badge
Rave BadgeA pin badge for Ravensbourne University's graphic design course. The pixel aesthetic pays tribute to the floppy disk, a save icon that's gone extinct but still lives in our muscle memory. A quiet prayer that Adobe doesn't crash.
